INDIANAPOLIS — The deadline to sign up for universal healthcare through the Affordable Care Act is looming, and Hoosiers are trying to get enrolled by midnight.

More than 6 million people have signed up for healthcare so far, and about 65,000 Hoosiers had signed up as of March 1, 2014.

Hundreds of people filled the main lobby of Eskenazi Health on Monday, waiting their turn for time with a healthcare navigator. In-person help ends at 4 p.m., but a phone bank is open until 7 p.m. Call the Navigator Hotline at 855-202-1053 if you have any questions.

“We had several instances where the website was hung up and we had to keep logging out and trying to get back in for individuals,” said Eskenazi Health’s Melissa Masterson.

Over the weekend, the site saw 2 million visits and more than 8.7 million visits during the past week.

However, the website has been plagued with problems since its launch. The site was off and on all day Monday.

“We’re seeing exactly what we saw in October is happening again today,” said Leah Akers, a healthcare advisor at Bernard Health at Nora. “We can’t log in and see anything. We can’t create an account for her to start the application process and we can’t call any representatives to start us an application over the phone either, so we’re kind of just stuck, but on a time crunch.”

Bernard Health is offering free help until 5 p.m. at 1300 E 86th Street. You can also call the universal healthcare helpline at 1-800-318-2596.

Due to the technical problems Monday, people who started an application as of Monday will have until mid-April to complete the process.
