BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY, Ind. (March 31, 2014) – Authorities identified a man killed early Monday morning after being hit by a semi truck on I-65 in Bartholomew County.

Police said Paul McGuire, 42, Indianapolis, was killed after the truck hit him on northbound I-65 near mile marker 69 around 2:30 a.m.

The driver of the truck, Dwayne Smotherman, 44, Indianapolis, said he was going northbound when he saw McGuire walking in the middle of the right lane just before impact. He tried to avoid him but didn’t see him in time.

The accident shut down I-65 for about two and a half hours. The interstate reopened around 5 a.m.

About an hour before the accident, Columbus police responded to a report of a person walking on I-65 near mile marker 64. McGuire was the man in that case—and police took him to a business so he could make arrangements to find a ride.
