PARAGON, Ind. – Family members are remembering a loving mother and her son who were both swept away by flood waters over the weekend.

Jana Payton and her son, 5-year-old Bronson Liggett, were killed Saturday afternoon. Indiana Department of Natural Resources officials believe Payton got lost in Monroe County before her car became trapped in a flooded area.

The family is encouraging drivers to be careful while traveling on flooded roads.

“You think it’s not going to happen to you,” said Rick Finney, Payton’s uncle. “We didn’t think this was going to happen to our family.”

Family members say Payton worked two jobs to support her two boys. She leaves behind a 7-year-old son who was staying with his grandparents the night of the accident.

Payton’s mother, Remona Winburn, is dealing with the loss of her daughter while battling stage four lymphoma.

“I appreciate everybody coming together as they have,” said Winburn.

The family is accepting donations at any People’s State Bank. Just ask for the “Jana Payton and Bronson Liggett Memorial Fund.”  Donations can also be mailed to People’s State Bank P.O. Box 69 Paragon, IN 46166. Family members have also set up an online account to accept funds.
