TIPTON (April 16, 2014) – Chrysler’s top executive will be in attendance as the automaker celebrates the opening of a new transmission plant in Tipton next month.

According to Chrysler, CEO Sergio Marchionne is scheduled to attend the May 13 event at the facility at 5880 W. St. Rd. 28 in Tipton. State and local officials will join UAW representatives and employees in dedicating the Tipton Transmission Plant.

In December 2012, Chrysler announced plans to acquire an existing Tipton facility and invest $162 million in an additional assembly site for nine-speed transmissions. The move is expected to create up to 850 new jobs.

The plant, located at U.S. 31 and State Road 28, was originally built as part of a partnership between Chrysler and Getrag Transmission.

In addition to the plant opening, Marchionne is expected to speak at the commencement at Indiana University Kokomo on the same day. He’ll receive an honorary degree.
