INDIANAPOLIS (April 23, 2014) – A pair of robberies prompted an alert at IUPUI.
The Indiana University Police Department at Indianapolis issued the crime alert Wednesday after two robberies were reported to Indianapolis Metropolitan police in the area of 1400 Montcalm. Students living in the 1200 block of Indiana Avenue were urged to be extra vigilant.
The first robbery happened around 7:30 p.m. on April 14 near 14th and Montcalm. A man said two men approached him while he was getting into his car and asked him for a light. After that, one of the men moved behind the victim and stuck something into his side. The victim presumed it was a gun, police said. The other man took out a knife. The pair stole the man’s wallet and backpack before running off.
The second robbery happened on April 20, again near 14th and Montcalm. In that case, a man approached a woman and asked to use her phone. She told him he couldn’t; he returned minutes later with a gun and demanded her phone. The woman threw her phone, got up and ran away, leaving behind her purse. The man took her phone and purse before walking away.
No one was hurt in either robbery.
Police issued the following tips:
- Always be aware of your surroundings.
- Use the buddy system, walk with a friend.
- Avoid secluded and or darkened areas.
