HAMMOND (May 2, 2014) – A Hammond police officer is on leave after a video surfaced on YouTube that appears to show him abusing a police dog.

The video, posted Wednesday, shows the officer striking the dog in the stomach. At one point, he appears to lift the dog off the ground by his leash. The officer has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.

Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. released a statement saying he was “shocked and saddened” by the video.

“When you find out it happened with an employee of yours, it makes it that much more shocking and disturbing,” the statement read in part.

The officer’s name has not been released because the department considers this a personnel matter.
