Boy, 3, dead after fire at Muncie home

MUNCIE (May 8, 2014) – Questions remain about the fire that killed a 3-year-old boy.

Muncie fire 2Muncie Fire Chief Eddie Bell said the call came in around 9 a.m. Firefighters saw flames coming from the home when they arrived at 1724 S. Daly Ave. According to the fire chief, some neighbors reported hearing an explosion around the time of the fire.

Two adults and two children—a 3-year-old and a 14-month-old—were inside the home when the fire started. The adults and 14-month-old child were taken to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, treated and released. Three-year-old Clayton Carnes died in the fire.

Police said the adults in the home are being questioned. The boy’s mother Katherine Wooten was staying at the home with a man named Dustin Mitchell.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and the Delaware County Prosecutor’s Office is involved. State Police and Delaware County Emergency Management were also at the scene.

Muncie Mayor Dennis Tyler said it was a “sad day” as he and other officials gave an update during a press conference Thursday afternoon.

The 3-year-old’s biological father was working in another state when he got the news. He is traveling back to Muncie.
