EDINBURGH, Ind. (May 14, 2014) — Strong storms moved through central Indiana Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

In Johnson County, a sudden burst of wind toppled part of the stands at the Edinburgh High School athletic complex. No one was in the stands. The track team was at an away meet when the storm hit.

“It was all white with hail and leaves and I couldn’t see anything, I had to pull over and stop,” said Bethany Davis, who graduated from Edinburgh High School last year.

“I got home and there was a tree I guess that got struck by lightning, right across the street from my house and it took out a phone pole,” said Davis.

About a quarter mile away from the high school, huge trees were down in the middle of Rest Haven Cemetery.

“When I pulled in, I couldn’t believe when I walked up, ‘cause I’ve been here when it’s not like this. A lot of people could not believe it,” said Stephanie Sichting, director of Johnson County EMA.

“The football stadium seating has been ripped and also in the cemetery right down the street here they have multiple big trees that have been uprooted and laid flat all over the cemetery,” said Sichting.

No injuries were reported from the storm damage. School was on schedule at Edinburgh Community Schools Wednesday morning.

Sichting said she alerted the National Weather Service of the damage. However, representatives from the NWS said they would not come for an in-person survey because it was probably not a tornado.

FOX59 meteorologist Ron Smiley said the conditions and witness reports likely point to a microburst, a strong, sudden downburst of wind during a storm.
