VENICE, Fla. (May 19, 2014) – Some Florida fishermen thought they’d caught “the big one.”
It ended up being a 12-foot hammerhead shark.
They wrestled the line for a couple of hours until they realized it was wrapped around a pole. One of the men jumped into the water, only to discover the catch of the day was an injured, pregnant shark.
Something had taken a large bite out of the shark—the fishermen could see the bite marks. They helped it to shore and then pulled out the hammerhead’s pups, one by one. They said there were about 20 of them.
The baby sharks swam away. Their mother did not survive.
