(May 22, 2014) – Today is National Vanilla Pudding Day!

The classic dessert we know and love has been around since the 19th century.

Most culinary historians agree that our modern recipe evolved from custards, which date back to Ancient Rome.

Before the days of instant dessert, vanilla pudding was  made by carefully simmering together milk, sugar, salt, butter, vanilla extract and cornstarch.

However, Jell-O forever changed the dessert when it introduced its first line of instant pudding in the 1950s.

The advertising campaign announcing the new product promoted it as a “busy-day dessert.”

Additionally, vanilla pudding mix is a versatile ingredient that is used in baked goods to make them more moist and fluffy.
