INDIANAPOLIS – Hundreds gathered on Monument Circle Friday for this year’s 500 Festival memorial service, including one local woman whose husband was the victim of violent crime late last year.

“It was just a big honor for me to be up there,” said Jamie Vester, whose husband Jim was killed in a shooting last December.

Two teenagers were arrested in connection with the crime.

Tryon Kincade, 19, and Tyshaune Kincade, 18, were charged with murder and robbery in the death of 32-year-old SFC James Vester.

On Friday, Vester’s wife was chosen to lay a wreath at the base of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument during the annual 500 Festival memorial service.

SFC Vester had been part of the ceremonial unit that helped put on the memorial service every year.

“It’s very emotional,” said Vester. “Every holiday’s emotional but this is a rough one.”

“We know that for your families, every day is Memorial Day,” said Gov. Mike Pence during Friday’s service.

“We’ve found our new normal and we’re just living our lives like Jim would want us too,” said Vester.
