FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ind. (May 24, 2014) — A 9-year-old girl has passed away after a bicycle accident in Franklin County.

Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating the bicycle accident, which happened at the Mounds Recreational Area campground just north of Brookville.

Witnesses say the girl was riding her bike down a paved incline at a high rate of speed and tried to slow down by using her feet instead of the bike’s brakes.

She left the roadway and hit a small ditch, causing her to hit the handle bars with her throat and neck.

Witnesses and other campers tried to help her before emergency medical services arrived.

The girl was taken to the Children’s Hospital of Cincinnati by Air Care.

She was later pronounced dead due to her injuries.
