LA PORTE (June 17, 2014) – Police are investigating after the body of a 70-year-old La Porte woman was found in a freezer.

According to the La Porte County Herald Argus, the woman was found Sunday night inside a home in the 100 block of McClung Road. Daniel Shoffner, 47, La Porte, was taken into custody on a preliminary charge of murder. Shoffner lived at the home with the woman, police said.

The body had been frozen solid in the small freezer. Authorities weren’t sure how long the body had been in there, and said the remains would have to be thawed out before they can do an autopsy.

Neighbors told the newspaper that the woman had been living with Shoffner for several months after her husband passed away. They described them as boyfriend and girlfriend.

The woman’s name has not yet been released. Investigators expected the autopsy to be complete Wednesday.
