INDIANAPOLIS – It was a life changing performance that landed Indianapolis native Valerie Rockey on television screens across the country. Rockey tapped her way into the spotlight on FOX hit show “So You Think You Can Dance.”

It was probably one of the most nerve wrecking times of my life but dancing in front of the judges was, that itself was an experience because I mean I’ve watched the show forever and being in that position watching them watching me was like unreal to me,” said Valerie Rockey.

Valerie hit the stage in Los Angeles where she’s now attending dance school. To her surprise the judges loved her tap routine, a form of dance that isn’t too popular on the show.

“I’m usually like not a crier but I could have like bawled my eyes out if they kept talking to me about it cause I was just so overwhelmed with excitement,” said Rockey.

The excitement stretched 2,000 miles across the country. Friends and her dance family at Tippy Toes School of Dance in Indianapolis were glued to the screen watching Valerie’s breakout solo performance.

“I cried, I just balled. I couldn’t believe it was happening. I couldn’t believe that a little girl that began dancing in my garage I could not believe she was on a national television show doing her tap dance,” said Tippy Toes owner, Kathryn Simpson.

And the Rockey family has been rooting for Valerie since the good old days and to witness this moment was surreal.

“We saw a glimpse of her running toward the camera and yelling that’s her that’s her,” said Valerie’s mom, Debbie Rockey.

Debbie Rockey is getting the whole city behind her daughter promoting Valerie watch on her Facebook page embracing the title “dance mom” full on.

“You know you’re a dance mom when you know glitter falls out of your purse or you have safety pins everywhere or whatever,” said Debbie Rockey.

Auditions continue this week and we’ll have to be on Valerie watch to catch her next appearance Wednesday nights on FOX 59 at 8pm.
