Columbus 2-year-old child rescued from hot car after father passes out

COLUMBUS, Ind (June 20, 2014)– Officer rescues child from a car after being notified by a passerby.

Thursday afternoon someone notified an officer of a suspicious vehicle in a mall parking lot.  The officer investigated the vehicle and found James Elgar, 27, of Elizabethtown passed out behind the wheel of his vehicle with a 2 year old child in the backseat.

The child was checked out and released to a family member.  At the time of the incident, the temperature was at 87 degrees outside.

Elgar was taken to the Bartholomew County jail and charged with possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia and negligence of dependent.

Elgar also had a warrant for failure to pay child support.
