New survey shows cell phone usage ranks higher than personal hygiene

(July 1, 2014) – A new survey shows that Millennial rank cell phone usage higher than personal hygiene.

A survey conducted by Braun Research, Inc.  found that 96 percent of respondents ages 18 to 24 considered mobile phones to be “very important,” compared to 93 percent for toothbrushes and 90 percent for deodorant.

But it’s not just youngsters who are obsessed with cell phones these days. Looking at all survey respondents, which basically represent the entire adult population, 91 percent said their cell phone was just as important as their car and deodorant.

What’s more, all survey respondents collectively said their mobile phone is significantly more important than television and coffee.

Nearly half of all respondents (47 percent) said they couldn’t make it through the day without their smartphone. Almost 80 percent of respondents would give up alcohol or chocolate to regain access to their mobile phone.

Checking a cell phone while driving ranked as the most annoying phone habit, with 38 percent of respondents saying so. Interestingly, only 7 percent were annoyed by checking a mobile phone during meal times.

Talking loudly in public and dishing out too much personal information on social media tied as the second most annoying mobile-phone habit.

Judging by young respondents’ willingness to give up personal hygiene for the sake of their cell phones, perhaps future surveys will find body odors to be among the most annoying habits associated with using mobile phones.

Braun Research conducted a national telephone survey May 6 through 23, surveying 1,000 adults ages 18 and older who own a smartphone.
