INDIANAPOLIS, Ind, (July 12, 2014) — A home on the near north side of Indianapolis did not have working smoke detectors when a fire broke out late Friday night. But thankfully, the homeowner, a 71-year-old man, awoke to the smell of smoke. He was able to get out of the house safely and call for help.

It happened in the 1200 block of West 36th Street around 10 p.m. Firefighters got the flames under control in about 20 minutes, but not before the fire did somewhere near $50,000 in damage.

Firefighters say there was an electrical problem in the basement.

The homeowner has been living there for 20 years.
