KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (July 18, 2014)– A group of Hoosier teens on a mission trip in Tennessee were aboard a bus involved in a fatal accident Thursday afternoon.

Investigators believe that a mechanical issue prevented the bus driver from stopping at a red light, causing the bus to crash into a Kia Rio and another vehicle.  The driver of the Kia, 54-year-old Jewell Winton, was killed in the crash.

Officials with the Knoxville Police Department said 18 people, including 11 teens, were on the bus.

Seven people, including two teens, were taken to the hospital.  Police said their injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

The teens were participating in a mission trip through Johnson University.  Officials with Johnson University confirm the group was from Berea Christian Church of Brazil, Ind.
