INDIANAPOLIS (August 17, 2014)--The non-custodial father accused of abducting his child turned himself in after contacting FOX59.

"I have nothing to hide and that’s why I called you," said DeAndre Averitte.

Averitte says he got into a verbal altercation with Jeterica Penner early Saturday morning.  She is the mother of his child.

Averitte says he took his 9-month-old son, Kristian, from the home because he feared for his safety.  He's accused of hitting Penner during the altercation, but Averitte denies those claims.

“No physical harm was done to anybody. I just grabbed my son and left," said Averitte

He took the toddler to the Caribbean Cove hotel and water park. Averitte explains why he removed his son.

“It wasn't a safe environment for him or me at that moment and based off my better judgment, I thought that was appropriate thing to do at the time," said Averitte.

Averitte later had second thoughts and dropped Kristian off with his aunt.  Kristian is now back with Penner.

"How do you abduct your child?  How do you kidnap someone you work so hard for every day to take care of?" questioned Averitte.

He called FOX59 to share his side of the story before turning himself into police.

"I was rational enough to think about everything and here I am," said Averitte.

He has been preliminary charged with domestic battery, residential entry, and auto theft.
