BLOOMINGTON (Aug. 25, 2014) – A Bloomington man landed in jail after police say he put his hand over his baby daughter’s mouth in order to get her to go to sleep.

Philip Wilcoxen, 23, had dropped off his 9-month-old daughter from visitation Wednesday night when the girl’s mother noticed bruising under her eyes. The mother took the girl to IU Health Bloomington Hospital to be checked out.

Bloomington police questioned Wilcoxen, who initially told them the girl suffered the injuries after a swing fell on her. Doctors said the girl’s injuries didn’t match that scenario—and Wilcoxen told police he’d put his hand over the baby’s mouth because she wouldn’t quiet down and go to sleep.

Wilcoxen was arrested Thursday on a preliminary charge of battery.
