(Aug. 28, 2014) - Some big changes are coming to the forecast for today and the weekend, giving us a better overall picture about what you can expect over the Labor Day weekend.  It looks like you’ll need the umbrella with big rain chances for both Sunday and Monday.  For outdoor activities Saturday will likely be the best day over the weekend with most of Saturday looking dry.

It will be overcast and not as warm as what we saw yesterday.  Highs should hit the mid-80s.  Over the next seven days, today is likely to have the smallest rain chance.  Things will begin to change on Friday.

Winds will be out of the east with wind speeds light.  Humidity levels are lower this morning with dew points in the mid-60s.  They will remain there for today with dew points heading up again overnight tonight.  The weekend will be humid.

Doesn't look like much right now but…

jim surface

We are watching two areas of low pressure developing this morning.  One of those is situated over Nebraska with another much smaller area located in west-central Texas.  The upper low is the area churning over Nebraska, which will see a cool day today with plenty of moderate to light rain.  The upper low will track through Iowa and over Wisconsin before traveling over the Great Lakes.  This will bring a relatively broad area of unsettled weather to the Plains and Great Lakes regions.

For us this means chances for off and on spotty showers.  There will be plenty of moisture to work with at the surface and in the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere so heavy rain and big rain totals will be possible.  Things will slowly pick up for our area with only spotty showers caused by the upper low through Saturday night.  By Sunday, however, the trailing low pressure area will roll through the state.  Sunday and even Monday could be washouts with only small breaks in rain throughout the day.  At this point severe weather is not expected but flash flooding and river flooding will not be out of the question.
