KOKOMO (Sept. 9, 2014) – Kokomo’s city council snuffed out a proposed smoking ban.

The 5-4 vote Monday night defeated the proposed ordinance. A council member who originally supported the ban decided to switch his vote.

The measure would’ve banned smoking inside bars and social clubs, but it met fierce opposition in the Howard County community. A large crowd turned out Monday night to voice both opposition and support for the ban.

The ordinance would have banned the use of E-cigarettes in all enclosed public establishments.

Business owners railed against the measure, saying it would have crippled their livelihood. Proponents of the smoking ban argued that it would help improve the health of Kokomo residents.
