INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (November 9, 2014) — First the “ice bucket challenge” helped to bring awareness to ALS, but a local woman is raising money with a hotter idea: a chili cook-off.

Mindy Byers has been putting on the chili cook-off in Indianapolis for the past four years, in honor of her mother who lost her battle with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS.

She says her friends and family all volunteer to help with the cook off.

All the money raised will benefit the ALS Association of Indiana.

“With the ice bucket challenge this summer it’s been more and more prevalent,” Byers said. “I mean people are talking more which is wonderful. I never dreamt we would get this type of enthusiasm and interest so it’s been great to see that. I wish my mom could have seen that.”

Keeping in line with the ice bucket challenge, the winner of the cook off got to pour a cold bucket of chili on Mindy’s head to celebrate the cause.
