Ben Davis receiver Brennan Gillis eludes a defender after a catch in the Giants' 49-45 win over Center Grove.

INDIANAPOLIS – Close games and drama have defined many of competitive Class 6A playoffs.

Strong teams have meant even stronger competition in the 32-team tournament that has led to a few upsets and a lot of close games.

The Semi State round was no different.

Ben Davis and Center Grove put on an offensive display on the west side Friday night while Carmel and Penn did the opposite near South Bend.

In the end the Giants had enough offense to rally from a 17-point second half deficit to beat the Trojans 49-45 while the Greyhounds had enough defense to knock off the Kingsman 14-13 to earn spots in the November 29th state championship game.

Ben Davis’ Chris Evans broke a 74-yard touchdown run with just under two minutes to go to complete the Giants comeback and send them to a state title game for the first time since 2002.

Issac James’ 69-yard touchdown rush in the fourth quarter proved to be the winning score for Carmel, but it was a missed extra point by Penn that would prove the difference as the Greyhounds go to the state title game for the third time in four years.
