New Palestine and Cathedral advance to the State Championship
NEW PALESTINE – Before one of the biggest games of his coaching career, Kyle Ralph had one thing he wanted his team to prove when they took on the defending state champions.
“We don’t want to be known as a ‘One-and-Done’ type team,” said the New Palestine head coach. “Last year was great-and our goal was to improve upon that.”
That’s exactly what his Dragons did-though they waited as long as they could to make it happen.
In their Class 4A Semi State game against Columbus East, New Palestine fell behind by 14 in the fourth quarter but rallied for 16 unanswered points to score a 30-28 victory over the Olympians on their home field Friday night.
Spencer Corey's field goal in the final seconds gave the Dragons the dramatic victory and it helped them advance to the Class 4A State Championship game where they will face New Prairie. The Cougars beat Northridge 28-10 Friday night in the north Semi State Game.
Cathedral also had to rally to pick up a victory in the Class 5A South Semi State against Bloomington South. They trailed 21-14 in the fourth quarter but tied it up late on a Max Bortenschlager one-yard touchdown run to send it to overtime.
When there Evan Christopher played the hero. After Bloomington South got a field goal on the first possession of overtime , the Cathedral running back finished off the game with his 2nd touchdown run of the night to give the Irish another Semi State victory.
They will face LaPorte for the state championship next Saturday night.
Lutheran's hopes for a trip to the state championship were dashed on Friday night.
In their Class A Semi State game against North Vermillion they fell behind in the second half and could never recover as the Falcons beat the Saints 37-19 in a game played at Roncalli High School.
