INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (December 13, 2014) — Indy firefighters spent their Saturday morning hanging out with 53 area kids and providing them with some holiday cheer.

IFD’s annual “Clothe a Child” program pairs firefighters with a child who will then go shopping with them and pick out a new coat, a new pair of shoes and school clothes. The children’s day started off bright and early with a 7AM breakfast, followed by a bus trip to Castleton Square Mall where they went shopping at Sears. After the shopping trip, the children and firefighters returned to the union hall for a meet and greet with Santa himself and to open an early Christmas present.

This year, it took about $10,000 to outfit all 53 children. Clothe a Child is funded by donations, gifts and the Fill the Bell program, which started in the 1940’s as the Mile-O-Dimes.

IFD crews are now raising funds for next year’s Clothe a Child event. You’ll see them set up at both Circle Center Mall and Castleton Square Mall from 9AM until 9PM for the two weeks prior to Christmas.
