INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Jan. 10, 2015) — Flames erupted at a near southwest side business late Friday night.

Firefighters were called to  OmniSource Corporation in the 2200 block of S. Holt Road just before 11:30 p.m.

Crews from Wayne Township, the Indianapolis Fire Department and Decatur Township all helped battle the fire in the plant’s shredder building. They found a large fire burning within the scrap metal shredder.

Frozen hydrants, a busted fire hose, slick surfaces and frozen fire gear all complicated the effort. one ladder truck also stopped operating properly when one of the stabilizing outriggers would not retract. But crews got the flames under control in about 30 minutes.

The fire was contained to the single building and there were no injuries. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

OmniSource Corporation has grown to become one of North America’s largest processors and distributors of scrap and secondary metals.  There was no immediate estimate of damages to the facility.
