ANDALUSIA, Ill (January 16, 2015) – A dog helped save another dog that fell through the ice Thursday morning at a water treatment plant in Illinois.

According to WQAD 8, one of the workers at the plant had just returned from his lunch break when one of the dogs was running around and trying to get his attention.

Joe Dungan told WQAD 8, “I looked over in this hole over here and the other dog was in the water trying to get out, so I called 911.”

“I think he was trying to tell me something, he was saving his friend, and I kept telling the dog that it would be alright, that we were getting help as quick as we could,” said Dungan.

Rescue crews and plat workers used a flat-bottomed boat to reach the stranded animal.

One of the rescuers said, “It was worn out. He didn’t have much longer. It’s a good thing that we got to him when we did.”

The dog that fell into the ice was shivering but is expected to make a full recovery. He was taken into custody by animal control.

The dog that is being called a hero got scared and ran off.

Unfortunately, no one knows who the dogs belong to.  Both dogs wore collars, but not tags, according to animal control.
