(Feb. 11, 2015) – Mr. Owl said it takes three licks to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop.

Scientists say it takes a lot more than that.

A study recently published in the Journal of Fluid Mechanics from researchers at New York University and Florida State University found that it would take about 2,500 licks for someone to make it to the middle of a Tootsie Pop, according to the New York Post.

The researchers developed a theory for how flowing liquid dissolves and shrinks material. They then used that theory to find out how long it would take to dissolve a lollipop. It takes about 1,000 licks per centimeter of candy to reach the center.
