SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. (February 16, 2015) – The bodies of an 84-year-old mother and her 60-year-old son were found outside their Virginia home Sunday morning, and investigators believe that the son died while trying to get help for his mother.

According to WTVR, a neighbor discovered both bodies around 8:20 a.m. Sunday. The body of Viola Cox was outside on the back steps of her home, and the body of Douglas Cox, Viola’s son, was on a trail that connected Viola’s home to the neighbor’s home.

“Our initial investigation of this scene appears to show that Mrs. Cox suffered a medical emergency last night and as her son was attempting to summon aid by utilizing a trail leading to a neighbor’s house, he also suffered a medical emergency,” Spotsylvania Sheriff Roger Harris told WTVR.

Investigators said there was no sign of forced entry into the house and no sign of trauma or violence to the victims.

A medical examiner will determine the exact cause of death for both mother and son.
