INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Feb. 18, 2015) -- Central Indiana is in the grips of a nasty winter regime. At times, Wednesday, it looked like someone picked up a snow globe with all of the snow flakes flying around. The concern tonight is roads becoming very icy, because as the temperature flirts with record lows, whatever melted will freeze solid.

A crew of nearly 50 drivers from Indianapolis Department of Public Works will spend the overnight treating any and all icy spots on surface streets.

"Some of those turn lanes, intersections, center turn lanes, things like that that may have a little bit of slush in them still. We're gonna be taking care of those," said Scott Manning, spokesman for the DPW.

Roads in open areas may have some blowing and drifting, something you may not see until it's too late.

"Our drivers are going to be paying a lot of attention to those areas, trying to keep as much of that snow off the roadways as possible," Manning added.

Indiana Department of Transportation has hundreds of trucks statewide ready to tackle the same obstacles. Many of those drivers are on rotating 12 hour shifts because safety is their number one priority. Let's face it, it is winter and it is central Indiana. But, no matter how used to it you are, there are some who can't wait for warmer weather.

"It's gotta be summer, getting out there going to the beaches, all that," said Austin Merritt of Center Grove.

Tomorrow morning, you'll want to get up earlier to warm up your car and start your drive to work. When you do, you're urged to go a lot slower since black ice will be a concern.
