LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Lafayette police are warning about a tax scam that uses the department’s non-emergency telephone number.

According to the Lafayette Police Department, someone has “cloned” or “spoofed” the number (807-1200), making it look like police are involved. Callers say they’re IRS agents collecting overdue taxes.

Police said anyone who receives the call should hang up. Don’t send money under any circumstances. If you have questions about your taxes, you should call the IRS.

The department said no Lafayette police officer or dispatcher will call trying to collect taxes.
