Indianapolis man arrested after shots at party during Little 500 weekend in Bloomington
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (April 26, 2015) – One person is in jail after shots were fired during a party early Saturday morning in Bloomington during Little 500 weekend. Indiana State Police say just after 1 a.m. Saturday officers witnessed a large fight break out during a party in the parking lot across from Indiana University’s Memorial Stadium.
Troopers ran toward the fight and officers heard three shots being fired. As they crossed Dunn Street toward the fight, two more shots were fired and party goers ran from the scene. When police got to where the shots had been fired, they found a man waving a gun and pointing it at a group of people.
Police told the man to drop the gun, but the man instead fired another shot toward the group of people. The man with the gun then began to run and threw the gun under a car.
The man, later identified as Lawrence Gomes, 27 of Indianapolis, was apprehended and taken into custody.
Officers began looking for possible victims and interviewed witnesses.
Several spent bullet casings and unfired bullets were found at the scene and two bullet holes were found in the wall of a nearby apartment.
No one was shot during the incident.
Gomes was preliminarily charged with criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, pointing a loaded firearm and possession of cocaine.
