GREENWOOD, Ind. (May 4, 2015)-- Residents in the Valle Vista community of Greenwood think they may have spotted a man on his way to rape an elderly woman Friday morning. Now those neighbors want to begin a community crime watch.
Ira Link has reportedly confessed to police and his mother that he wore a mask to attack the 70-year-old widow in her home at about 9 a.m. that day.
At least one neighbor has reported seeing a man matching Link's description walking down a neighborhood street in the hour before the attack according to Valle Vista Homeowners Association member Stuart Meyer.
"I think people do understand that this is a one-off event," he said, "but at the same time what we want to do is ask if there is anything we can do to prevent these things through more heightened alertness of everybody, then that's what we want to accomplish with this."
Meyer said a Greenwood police officer will attend Wednesday night's annual homeowners association meeting to brief residents on beginning a community crime watch.
"We had actually done that about a month ago because we had several car break-ins and one brazen daylight robbery kick-in, so this has been in the works before this happened."
Link remains inside the Johnson County Jail, held on rape and burglary charges. His bond is set at $192,000. Reportedly, he tried to kill himself Friday night before his arrest and was placed on suicide watch.
Sources told FOX59 News that Link is remorseful and claims he has "a disease" and is unable to control his urges.
Link was released from prison in June 2014 after serving 20 years of 46-year prison sentence for conviction of two counts of child molesting in St. Joseph County.
He registered in Marion and Johnson counties as a sexually violent predator.
Investigators have not only Link's confession and jacket he allegedly left behind but also other evidence.
Johnson County Prosecutor Brad Cooper told FOX59 News he received the probable cause affidavit from detectives Monday afternoon and expects to officially charge Link in court Wednesday.
