INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.  (June 19, 2015)– A 14-year-old boy, who was reported missing from his Illinois hometown earlier this month, caused a serious head-on crash on the east side of Indianapolis Friday.

Police said the teen stole his grandmother’s 2009 Ford SUV in Mason County, Illinois.  Detectives said the boy was driving at a high rate of speed northbound on Post Road, likely ignoring a red light at the intersection of Post Road and I-70.

When officers arrived to the scene around 6:30 p.m., they found the SUV had crashed into a 2001 Dodge pick-up truck. The driver, identified as 53-year-old Terry Riggs, was extricated from his vehicle and transported to IU Health Methodist Hospital in critical condition.

Two other vehicles sustained minor damage in the incident. Those drivers were not injured.

Authorities said it is likely the teen will be arrested on preliminary criminal charges once investigators have completed their investigation.
