Police were sent to the 3100 block of Cluster Pine Drive on a report of a person shot in the early morning hours of June 16. When they arrived, they found Phelps, Jr. suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced deceased at 2:43 a.m.

According to court documents, relatives in the home told authorities they were sleeping when they heard someone kick in their front door.  Phelp’s mother told police she saw two unknown males, who she believed to be in their teens, in her home. She reported one of the boys pointed a gun at her. She said she ran away and hid in a bedroom closet.

The victim’s 17-year-old brother told police he and his brother were asleep in the bedroom they shared when they awoke to someone breaking into their house. According to the probable cause affidavit, Phelps went into the hallway to investigate and was heard asking, “What ya’ll doing in my house?” Phelps brother said he ran into the bedroom closet to hide and call 911. He told police he heard multiple gunshots fired.

During a search of the area, police located a wallet in the front yard of the house. Police said an ID card belonging to Grady was found inside.

Family members said Phelps graduated from Warren Central High School in 2014 and had dreams of becoming a chef some day.
