LAWRENCE, Ind. (June 27, 2015) -- Friends say goodbye to Cody James Gay, the Lawrence man who was stabbed to death in Anderson. Court records show Cody was in a relationship with Emerson’s estranged wife. Emerson stabbed and killed Cody, 25, before kidnapping his wife and her young children. Emerson was caught in Minnesota, the woman and her children were found unharmed. He's charged with murder and kidnapping.

Emerson also violated a court ordered no contact agreement. It was issued as part of his bond agreement for previous charges. He was charged in April for domestic battery, confinement, strangulation and intimidation.

Friends knew him simply as Cody James, and say his death left a void in their lives.

"He was somebody very special, he was my surrogate big brother," said Kristina Walker.

Another friend, Jordan Marsh, said "We were closer than I've been with anyone."

Marsh says Cody James was big in to music, loved singing karaoke and was the lead singer of a local band. His parents were asked not to saying anything to the media until after the trial, but echo the same message that his friends have about how great a person Cody was.
