INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (July 16, 2015) – A woman was killed by a stray bullet near Crown Hill Wednesday night.
Police responded to the 3600 block of Salem Street around 9:15 p.m. Wednesday. Officers found an unresponsive woman, later identified as Renea Lloyd, 41, at the scene.
An autopsy report later confirmed the Lloyd’s cause of death was a gunshot wound.
Police believe she was killed by a stray bullet from a handgun, and they’re investigating it as a homicide. Detectives also tell FOX59 there were no reports of shots fired in the area before the incident.
Her son, 21-year-old David Lloyd, says he found his mother in the kitchen near the refrigerator. He said she was already deceased.
"Our youth don`t know the responsibility of owning a fire weapon or what a human life means in this neighborhood. A shot went off and happened to hit my mother," he said.
David said his mother was making food in the kitchen when she was hit and killed.
"The person who probably fired that bullet probably knows my mother. She loved everybody," said David.
David is an only child. The young man is now trying to figure out how to pay for his mother's funeral and understand why this violence happened to his family.
"This bullet came through and came through an entire house, not touching a tree or bush, and hitting her directly in the head. She was on the ground when I walked in the house," said David.
Detectives are asking for the public's help. If anyone saw or heard anything suspicious Wednesday night in the area, please call CrimeStoppers at 262-TIPS. The family has also set up a GoFundMe page.
