Indy to host next U.S. Conference of Mayors during presidential election year
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (July 21, 2015) – Mayor Greg Ballard announced Tuesday that Indianapolis was selected to host the 2016 U.S. Conference of Mayors, an event that could bring some high-profile attendees to our city.
The four-day conference will take place June 24th – 27th at the JW Marriott downtown, and with it being presidential election year, Ballard and other city leaders say they believe it will help put the spotlight on Indy in a big way.
The last conference was held in San Francisco just last month, bringing-in about 300 leaders from our nation’s largest cities. Visit Indy’s President and CEO Leonard Hoops says, based on those attendance figures, the economic impact should be about a million dollars. But that’s not what Hoops and other city leaders were most excited about during Tuesday’s press conference. Given the timing and the audience of elected officials, city leaders believe we could see presidential candidates attending along with a lot of media coverage.
“In San Francisco they had President Obama Speaking and former Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, certainly next year in a presidential election year, they’re going to have extremely high profile speakers as well,” Hoops said.
Hoops also gave credit to Mayor Ballard during the conference, saying Ballard has been working hard to make Indy the host of this conference.
