JOHNSON COUNTY (August 18, 2015) - Investigators from several Johnson County police agencies hope to find a possible “serial flasher” who’s been exposing himself to women and girls for the last couple months.
Police in Franklin, Greenwood, Edinburgh and other parts of the county have received multiple reports of a man in a truck calling out to women and flashing his genitals at them. There have also been cases of a man showing up on doorsteps with his genitals exposed.
“We are investigating some similar reports with similar information for each one,” said Franklin Police Detective Ray Tice.
Tice and other authorities can’t definitively say if they are looking for the same man. But the details in several reports are very similar. They involve a white man with bald or buzzed hair in a white pickup truck with a dark-colored camper top. In most cases, the man gets out of the truck, and calls out to a woman before exposing himself.
Most recently, a woman told police Sunday a man and truck matching the descriptions followed her from the Circle K station at Bluff Road and State Road 37, back to her nearby neighborhood. Once there, the man said, “Hey lady,” and exposed himself to her.
“Pretty bold by exposing themselves to people and getting their attention so that they see them exposing themselves,” Tice said.
A similar incident happened to a Franklin woman who was leaving for work August 13. As she was pulling away from her apartment in the 1200 block of North Lakeview Circle, her headlights revealed a man standing next to a white pickup truck with his pants pulled down.
In June, a 14 year old girl told police she was walking near Drake Road and Jefferson Street in Franklin when a man in a similar truck exposed himself to her and asked if she wanted a ride.
“I don’t know what their intentions are,” Tice said. “I don’t know if they want to try to take a next step and engage with someone after that.”
In late July, Franklin resident Susan O’Neil said her 77-year-old mother, who was visiting, answered a knock at the door. Her mother didn’t recognize the stranger, so she started to close the door.
“And then she said, ‘I looked down to shut the door’ and she said, ‘That’s when I noticed he was playing with himself.” O’Neil said.
In mid-July a woman in Nineveh said she looked out on her back porch in the 800 block of Drybread Lane to find a man fondling himself. The man matches the general description from other cases.
Johnson County Sheriff Doug Cox said investigators were hoping to find the white pickup truck on surveillance video from the Circle K gas station.
Meantime, authorities are asking everyone to be on the lookout for suspicious activity. If it is a single man responsible for the crimes, authorities want to find him before he does anything to endanger anybody.
Tice also said residents should not hesitate to call 911 if they become a victim of indecent exposure.
“We want to make sure that if we can find the person that we do so immediately before they become a further danger to the public,” Tice said.
