INDOT to install temporary traffic light at U.S. 52 and State Road 47 for I-65 detour
BOONE COUNTY, Ind. (Aug. 20, 2015) – The Indiana Department of Transportation revealed Thursday that it would install a temporary signal to increase safety and ensure orderly traffic flow at U.S. 52 and State Road 47 near Thorntown.
Traffic in the area has increased due to the closure of the Wildcat Creek bridge at I-65 northbound in Lafayette, forcing vehicles to use U.S. 52 as a detour. Earlier this week, a woman died in a crash in that area, prompting an impassioned plea on Facebook from Boone County Sheriff Mike Nielsen, who said he’s long wanted a traffic light at U.S. 52 and State Road 47.
Drivers along U.S. 52 and State Road 47 should expect delays as crews install the temporary signal. The effort could lead to brief stoppages or slowdowns.
Drivers should also use caution as other motorists adjust to the new traffic pattern. Warning signs and rumble strips will also be installed to give drivers advance notice of the temporary signal. Drivers on State Road 47 are being told to make sure trucks and other highway traffic are fully stopped before proceeding through the intersection on green.
Nielsen released a statement after hearing about INDOT’s decision:
“I am pleased with the decision from INDOT officials to install a light at the intersection. Our goal has always been protecting our school children, the citizens, and the motorists, traveling through Boone County. In addition to the light installation, INDOT will be installing warning signs and rumble strips to prepare motorists of the upcoming traffic light. The decision made today was the right decision and will undoubtedly help to ensure the safety of the motoring public. This truly was a united effort involving many agencies. I would like to thank INDOT, the Indiana State Police, Governor Mike Pence, Senator Brandt Hershman, Senator Joe Donnelly, and the Thorntown Police Department. I would also like to personally thank the public for their overwhelming support.”
