ORANGE COUNTY,Ind. (September 19, 2015)–A hunter was injured Saturday while making preparations for the upcoming deer hunting season.

Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating after 44-year-old Stephen Welp of Borden fell from his tree stand.

Welp fell 12 feet while trying to set up a tree stand by himself.  Investigators say he was attaching the stand to the tree, a strap loosened, and the stand fell as Welp clung to the platform.

Emergency ¬†personnel transported Welp from the woods to a conservation officer’s boat and was then taken by ambulance to the hospital for treatment of a broken leg.

Conservation officers say Welp was not wearing a safety harness at the time of the incident.
