Police say east side chase began as carjacking on 16th Street

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (September 21, 2015) – A carjacking suspect is in custody after a chase Monday morning.

According to police, an armed suspect stole a red Trailblazer SUV from a man at a gas station at 4132 East 16th Street.

The victim reported the stolen SUV to police, and an officer spotted the SUV around 5:20 a.m.

With three squad cars behind him, police say the suspect sped-up and took-off, going from 10th Street towards N. Eaton Avenue. The man then drove into the grass by a church and crashed into trees near Lick Creek.

Officers say the man actually jumped out of the moving SUV and ran right before it crashed.

With the help of K9 officers, IMPD caught the suspect around 6 a.m. and recovered

Officers say there’s now been three carjacking incidents in the same area, but they don’t know if the same suspect has been involved in the past.
