Kokomo woman charged in fatal drunk driving crash
Update (August 4, 2016) – Doty was sentenced to four years at the Indiana Department of Corrections, three years executed to be served on in home detention.
HOWARD COUNTY, Ind. (September 23, 2015) – A Kokomo woman was charged Monday for a drunk driving crash that resulted in the death of her passenger.
Brittany R. Doty, 27, turned herself in to the Howard County Jail at 12:35 p.m. on September 21. She is being held on a $12,000 bail.
On March 27 around 3:15 a.m., sheriff deputies were called to an accident in the area of 200 South and 400 East.
Doty was driving a gray Saturn with three passengers when she crashed the car into a creek.
Doty and two of the passengers were able to get out of the car on their own, but the third passenger, Joseph S. Turon, 22, was stuck in the rear passenger seat.
Paramedics and members of the Taylor Fire Department entered the water and attempted to locate Turon, but they were unable to find him.
Around 4 a.m., a tow truck pulled the car out of the creek, and medics located Turon. He was in the backseat, still wearing his seatbelt. He was transported to Community Howard Hospital, and he later died from his injuries.
Deputies smelled alcohol on Doty’s breath at the scene of the crash. Doty consented to a blood test.
On September 4, a deputy following up on the fatal crash was notified that Doty’s BAC level at the time of the crash was .10. At that time, deputy’s requested a warrant for Doty’s arrest.
Court documents show that Doty faces one count of causing death when operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a level 5 felony, one count operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a class C misdemeanor, and one count operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person, a class A misdemeanor.
Her initial hearing is set for September 29.
