INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Sept. 23rd 2015) – Federal and state prosecutors look to crack down on financial fraud in Indiana.
Over the last two weeks, the FBI has conducted two high profile raids at local businesses and that is no coincidence.
Last week federal investigators raided an upscale home in Carmel, as well as the corporate headquarters of nursing home provider American Senior Communities.
This week, the FBI raided a car dealership called Elite Imports seizing dozens of boxes of records while investigating possible financial fraud.
“The United States Attorney’s office is cracking down on white collar fraud,” said U.S. attorney Josh Minkler.
According to a memo issued to prosecutors around the country this month by the U.S. Department of Justice, fighting financial fraud is now a top priority for the government.
The goal is to hold people accountable for corporate misconduct.
“This is a priority for the Department of Justice. It’s a priority of mine. It will be aggressively prosecuted,” said Minkler.
While the FBI took the lead investigating former American Senior Communities CEO James Burkhart for possible misuse of Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements, the state Attorney General points out he too has expanded efforts to fight Medicaid fraud.
“We try to protect people on the front end and we do enforcement on the back end. It’s increasing on my watch and we need to do more,” said Indiana attorney general Greg Zoeller.
The day after being raided, the parking lot at Elite Imports has been virtually cleared out, but U.S. attorney Minkler promises when white collar crimes wind up in court, his office will now seek tougher sentences for those responsible.
“The days of half ways houses and suspended sentences are over,” said Minkler. “Our nation’s economy depends of effective criminal enforcement of our financial laws.”
Minkler says we should expect to see more raids in the coming weeks and months.
So far the owners of Elite Imports and former American Senior Communities CEO Burkhart have not been arrested or charged with any crimes.
