PERU, Ind. (Nov. 2, 2015) - A central Indiana man’s murder for hire plot was foiled by an undercover cop. Police say 44 year old David Wilkerson tried to hire a hitman to have two people killed, while he sat in the Miami County jail.
Wilkinson was arrested for child molestation charges in May and police now say he was working behind bars to have his alleged victim and her mother killed.
Friday, another arrest warrant was served for Wilkinson, who was already behind bars.
“He was incarcerated back in May by the Peru Police Department in reference to an investigation they’d done into some child molest and incest allegations,” said Detective Michael Rogers of the Miami County Sheriff’s Department.
Police say Wilkinson sexually molested a 13-year-old girl while he was living in Peru in 2012. His alleged victim came forward in April, and Wilkinson was arrested in May.
Since, Rogers says he’s hard at work, “He’s alleged to have hired someone to kill both the victim and her mother. So I initiated the investigation after receiving that information,” said Rogers.
While behind bars, police say Wilkinson attempted to have the alleged child molestation victim, and her mother killed. A series of recorded phone calls and surveillance video, confirmed to police, what a tip, from Wilkinson’s original hit man for hire had reported.
According to court documents, Wilkinson offered $40,000 to kill the mother and daughter. Further conversations would happen between Wilkinson and who he thought was his hitman, but instead was an undercover police officer.
"Wilkinson told the officer that he had to be careful on the recorded phone line, however, he did engage in conversation during which they discussed disposing of more than one and an amount of money in excess of $5,000. During the conversation, Wilkinson was verbally given the opportunity to abandon the murder conspiracy but continued the conversation," court documents read.
Wilkinson’s initial bond for the child molestation and incest charges he faced was $300,000. An additional $80,000 has been tacked on for the conspiracy to commit murder charge.
He’s due in court in December.
