INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Thanksgiving is a holiday off for most of us, but an Indianapolis couple spent the day weight training! They're preparing for a national weightlifting competition together next week.

Most people don't spend Thanksgiving in the gym.

"It's been really fun," said Jessi Edwards.

But for Jessi and Jeff Edwards, staying fit is a way of life. The two run Broad Ripple Fit Club and are two months married.

"I'm thankful that I'm a wife," said Jessi.

In another week, they'll have another first.

"This is going to be the first weightlifting meet at a national level that we're both going to. It'll be fun," said Jeff Edwards.

Jessi wanted to qualify again for the 2015 American Open, a national weightlifting competition in Reno, Nevada. Jeff decided he would try too, after time off from weightlifting, because of injury.

They both made the cut in October and have since been training together, on a strict schedule.

"You try not to miss a training day," said Jeff.

This Thanksgiving, they are supporting each other.

"Any sport you put your heart into is emotional somedays," said Jessi.

Both said they won't spend Thanksgiving Day solely in the gym. They planned to eat a proper Thanksgiving Dinner later Thursday night.

"I'm usually pretty conscious of what I put in my body. I do that for my performance, but I'm going to enjoy some pie on Thanksgiving," said Jessi.

"It's Thanksgiving, so I'm going to enjoy myself," said Jeff, "It's been a great year. Everyone's happy. Everyone's healthy. And that's all you can really ask for."

The competition is December 3rd through December 6th.
