Chatard defeats West Lafayette 31-7 for Class 3A title
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Gabe Coleman and Jarrod Stiver have combined for 226 rushing yards and a pair of second half touchdowns to lead Indianapolis Chatard past West Lafayette 31-7 in the Class 3A state football finals.
Chatard running back John Chavis broke a 7-7 tie on a 42-yard touchdown off-tackle run with 10:23 to play in the third quarter Friday at Lucas Oil Stadium and the No. 5 Trojans took the game’s momentum and a 14-7 lead.
Third-ranked West Lafayette’s lone score came on the game’s opening drive when the Red Devils marched 74 yards on eight plays, capped with a Matt Marley 6-yard touchdown reception from Mikey Kidwell.
Senior Jack Folkers of West Lafayette was named the Class 3A Blake Ress Mental Attitude Award winner.
The win gave the Trojans a record-setting 13th IHSAA football championship and won four consecutive Class 3A titles in which they were eligible to play.
