Las Vegas, Nev. (December 20, 2015)–Awkward doesn’t even begin to describe the final moments of the Miss Universe pageant which aired on the Fox network Sunday night.

Host Steve Harvey announced Miss USA as the second runner up and then announced Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, as Miss Universe.

There she stood wearing the crown, the sash, holding a bouquet of flowers, waving to a cheering audience.

Harvey, visibly embarrassed, slinked back to the center of the stage. “Okay folks,” Harvey said. “I have to apologize.”

Holding the card with the official results, Harvey reads, “The first runner-up is Colombia.”

There is a long pause.  The cameras take a close up of a Miss Philippines confused and somewhat in shock as Harvey continues, “Miss Universe 2015 is Philippines.”

Miss Philippines moved down stage and stood beside Miss Colombia, still wearing the crown.  It was clear neither woman knew what to do in this unscripted moment.

The audience’s cheers turned to jeers and Harvey finally stepped in.

“Let me just take control of this,’ Harvey says while holding up the results card with the winners clearly printed on it.  “This is exactly what is on this card.  I will take responsibility for this. It was my mistake.  It was on the card. Horrible mistake, but I can show it to you right here. The first runner up is Colombia. It is my mistake.”

The crown eventually was transferred to Pia Alonzo Wurtcbach 2015  Miss Universe.

Harvey later tweeted, “I’d like to apologize wholeheartedly to Miss Columbia & Miss Philippines for my huge mistake. I feel  terrible.”
