Indianapolis, Ind. (February 2, 2016) - A lousy television won't score you any points at your Super Bowl party, so you might be tempted to buy a new one.
Super Bowl week is one of the best times to buy a new TV and the popularity of 4K TV's is partly driving those sales this year.
One big box electronics store is advertising a 49" 4K Ultra HD TV for $599.99. Another store is offering a 55" 4K Ultra HD TV for $999.99.
But you won't be able to watch the big game in 4K, or much of anything else yet.
Also known as Ultra HD, 4K TV is higher clarity, with four times the number of pixels as full HD TV.
"The people that really notice the difference between SD and HD will notice it again in Ultra HD or 4K because the amount of pixilation, the amount of detail covered, is just unbelievable," said Robert Greene, President of IMS Productions.
Although IMS is synonymous with racing, IMS Productions does much more.
In fact, the crew partnered with the Lakers for the first ever full 4K broadcast from start to finish in December 2014.
"In racing I think the biggest difference is going to be the pit stops," said Greene. "Any place that you have the chance to slow down a resolution to see a replay, that’s when the 4K detail is just going to be mind-boggling."
The age of 4K may have begun, but the production world still has some work to do.
As you can imagine, transmitting an entire broadcast in 4K would require a tremendous investment, from the cameras to the production trucks.
So should you buy one now or wait?
"If you plan on making a television purchase and you’re going to keep that TV for a while, then 4K would probably be a smart thing to consider," said Greene.
He expects it will be five to ten years before 4K is mainstream, but says he's convinced 4K is coming.
